 Tigers - Racing Towards Extinction

We are just species sharing this home with the other species. Don't you think? Yet we aren’t really following the “sharing is caring” saying which we always teach our juniors, it’s ironic how we fail to follow it but expect everyone else to. Those species out there can’t even cry for help when their homes are being snatched away while we sit comfortably in our houses which couldn’t  possibly have been made without them. One of these species are tigers, because of our doings; they are on the Appendix 1 list in CITIES. We have completely exploited their lives and continue to do so every second we demand for their skin just to wear a fine piece of cloth which we don’t even need, while not realizing that there are bloodsheds of tigers out there which are needed to be killed just for that cloth which we want.It is not that killing these tigers only harms them but the whole ecosystem which directly or indirectly affects us. From the world’s largest mangrove forests in the Sundarbans, to the snowy mountains in Northeast China and Russia, protecting wild tigers and their natural homes provides benefits for thousands of species and millions of people. As top predators, wild tigers play an important role in maintaining the harmony of the planet's ecosystems. By preying on herbivores, tigers help to keep the balance between the prey animals and the forest vegetation which they feed upon. The organs of the tiger have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for ages. The bones of the tiger treat several diseases. They include malaria, typhoid, ulcers, burns, and dysentery. Restoration of energy is made possible through the parts of the tiger. Also tiger is important source for purer water. I feel very sad to say that only 4000 tigers are left in the wild. Tigers being so beneficial to the ecosystem are now edging towards extinction. . It is very disappointing to see that Tigers are listed in  Appendix 1 list in CITIES. We believe it shouldnt be shifted to any other Appendix because they are edging towards extinction and they are one of the most endangered animals in the world. 97 percent of the tiger population has disappeared in the last century.

Here is their situation today.

-Panthera tigris tigris (Bengal Tiger). Endangered (EN)

-Panthera tigris corbetti (Indochinese tiger). Endangered (EN)

-Panthera tigris jacksoni (Malayan tiger). Endangered (EN)

-Panthera tigris altaica (Siberian tiger or Amur tiger). Endangered (EN)

-Panthera tigris amoyensis (South China tiger). Critically endangered (CR)*

-Panthera tigris sumatrae (Sumatran tiger). Critically endangered (CR)

APPENDIX I

Species that are protected under Appendix I include,  for example, gorillas, tigers, leopards, Asiatic lions, rhinoceros, Asian elephants and some populations of African elephants, chinchillas, dugongs, manatees and red pandas.ic lions, rhinoceros, Asian elephants and some populations of African elephants, chinchillas, dugongs, manatees and red pandas.

The latest census indicates a population with less than 4,000 specimens in the wild. In 2009 IUCN estimated a total of 3,200 tigers, but some believe that the number has risen to almost 4,000 adults. In fact, WWF declared that 2016 was the first year that the population of tigers did not decrease in more than a century. Humans continue to destroy the habitat that Tigers once called home for their needs. It isn’t always easy for Tigers to find a new home. Even if they can quickly

adapt to a new environment, the fact that they are so territorial is a concern. Many Tigers end up killing each other for the right to a given area because they aren’t going to be able to live there together.  If the tigers go

extinct, the entire system would collapse. For e.g. when the Dodos went extinct in Mauritius, one species of Acacia tree stopped regenerating completely. So, when a species goes extinct, it leaves behind a scar, which affects the entire ecosystem. Another reason why we need to save the tiger is that our forests are water catchment areas. Therefore, it’s not just about saving a beautiful animal. It is about making sure that our well-being is maintained as the forests are known to provide ecological services like clean air, water, pollination, temperature regulation etc.  We believe we could still make a difference by stopping poaching , deforestation etc.  Last but not the least Save the tigers before they are silenced forever. Killing tigers is greed, not the need. Save Tiger! Save Nature!
